Wade in a wetland. Walk through a meadow of milkweeds. Learn to tell a beetle from a true bug--or dig into the subterranean world of fungi.  Sign up while there's still space in one of the evening courses offered through our Natural History Field Studies Program for adults, cosponsored with the Graduate School, USA. Summer session begins June 23, with all classes at our Woodend Sanctuary.  Register early; classes cancelled if minimum enrollment isn’t reached 2 weeks before class start date.

Maine: Fall Migration Featuring Monhegan Island
Enjoy fall migration at one of New England’s best-known migratory hotspots, Monhegan Island, located off the coast of central Maine. We spend three nights on Monhegan, watching for migratory songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, monarch butterflies and more. All travel on Monhegan is by foot, so this is the perfect trip for those who love to walk. The ferry ride to and from Monhegan crosses waters where shearwaters, alcids and marine mammals might be seen. Our trip also visits outstanding natural areas on the mainland. Join trip leader David Farner September 17-22, 2014. Learn more and register

The Battle is On!
Birdathon Battle of the Beltways

Earth Day marked the start of ANS’s 34th annual Bloomin’ Birdathon, which runs through Memorial Day, May 26. There’s still time to register and help ANS beat Irvine Nature Center in the first ever Battle of the Beltway Birdathons! Grab a buddy, a pair of binoculars and count for a cause, simply by counting the birds and wildflowers you see.  Sign up to participate. Pick and pledge to sponsor an individual or team. Make a donation. Learn more

P.S. Don't forget to send in your counts as soon as you complete your birdathon. We're tracking our results as the battle with Irvine wages on.

New Little Free Library at Preschool a Hit
Family at Little Library

The new Little Free Library, outside the gates of Teale Learning Center home to the Audubon Nature Preschool, is a huge hit. Thanks to alumni preschool parent Eric Nudelman for the installation help. Current preschool parents are coming up with design ideas for the inside of the library as well as projects for the surrounding area. Students will paint rocks and stones and plant bulbs around the library.

In other preschool news: Preschool ends May 23. The new school year begins after Labor Day, and AM and PM preschool classes for next year are full with waiting lists. One Friday Parent-Tot class is full but there are a few spots available in a second Friday Parent-Tot class as well as our Thursday Tagalong class. Apply today
